The Church of Sant’Agostino

Statue of Pope Pius II

Walking along the nave and entering the first hallway on the right, which leads to the Piccolomini Chapel, we cannot help noticing the splendid marble statue of Pope Pius II, made between 1844 and 1850 by the Sienese sculptor Giovanni Dupré. This work, a true masterpiece of Purist sculpture, is noteworthy not only because of its refined execution but also for its innovative iconography: for the first time, a pope is presented in a standing position.
