The Church of Sant’Agostino

Saint Nicholas of Tolentino

Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, one of the first Augustinians to be canonized, is the subject of a painted wooden sculpture placed above the altar dedicated to him, in the left transept of the church. The work, which can be dated around the turn of the sixteenth century, reflects the traditional iconography of this saint: a youthful appearance, with a beardless, emaciated face and erect posture. Saint Nicholas is depicted with two of his identifying attributes: the book of the Augustinian Rule and the star that appeared over the city of Tolentino before the saint died.
