The Church of Sant’Agostino

Devotion to Mary

Devotion to Our Lady was a special characteristic of the Augustinians. The origins of this devotion date so far back that it is impossible to establish a precise date. According to an ancient legend, this practice began spreading among the Augustinians after Our Lady appeared to Saint Monica.
It is because of this special bond between the Augustinians and Our Lady that a number of the works in the church of Sant’Agostino have the Virgin Mary as their subject.

  • Bruni G., Virgo Refugium peccatorum, 1853.
